what a girl wants, what this girl needs... is a wife.
the next few paragraphs will not be an expose on the benefits of lesbian marriage or the death of feminism (although i reserve the right to riff on those topics at a later date). stop reading now if you choose but, be sure, this will not center on those topics.
i need a wife to take care of me. now, in all fairness, i would kick the first guy who said those words to me squarely in the nuts without so much as blinking.
then, i would kick him again just to be sure he understood the first time.
if i had a wife, the dishes from sunday would have been washed on sunday instead of the tower of food-encrusted plates waiting for me to wash tonight at 10 o'clock. if i had a wife, my wife would have paid the bills already so after my long day at work, after dinner i can relax. if i had a wife, dinner would be waiting for me to get ho--, oh wait. mam does make dinner for me. and lately, with my fcuked up schedule, dinner is waiting on the stove for me.
i hear the whining you're doing right, now. "wahhh," you have a demanding job. "wahhh," you generally like what you do and earn a good living. "wait, aren't you a wife?"
bite me.
before those words even cross your lips, let me remind you what happens to people who piss me off. i believe it's not sexist at all for me to want a wife. my gender-neutral wife would clean my house weekly and vacuum daily. my wife would go grocery shopping, pick up the dry cleaning, run errands, put away laundry, wash the windows -- all things i have all intentions of doing but just can't seem to find the time.
christina, when she agrees to marry burke, negotiates the terms of her acceptance of his marriage proposal -- "i don't do the ring thing. we're both surgeons and we'll have a lot of money, we can hire a wife" couldn't be a truer statement for me. (aside from the medical school degree, but i am getting my master's degree in something else, does that count for something??)
after meeting up with an old friend travelling on a completely divergent path than mine, i was jealous for a minute or two of how simple her life seems in comparison. knowing myself though, there is no way on this planet i could step into her shoes and be happy.
yes, a wife -- definitely what this girl wants.

last night
what the fcuk was up with abc's decision to NOT run the latest episode of grey's anatomy again last night? sinking down into a little kid's whine: "it's not fair. they promised!" i whined for at least an hour. i'm thinking an email campaign may help vet some frustration although last night, i seriously contemplated driving to the local station armed with gray paintballs to make my point.
i flipped to channel 6 in my neck of the woods to see some pseudo-celebrity dressed to the nines with uber-bleached hair and teeth talking about the friggin' car show? class lets out too late for me to catch an entire episode on thursdays. now that mam is hooked, i find myself peppering him with questions when i get in -- what's happening? how did she get there? he did what?!? -- that (happily for me anyway) annoys him now as much as his questions annoyed me at the beginning of the season before the show made him an addict, too.
at the end of a long week, i really look forward to settling in the couch and watching grey while i unwind. stupid car shows with airbrushed-tan pseudo-celebs doesn't quite do the trick. damn you, american broadcast company.

oh george!
sorry for the delay in posting about this week's grey's anatomy lesson, i am now watching the repeat episode on friday evenings since i have class on thursday nights. bless you, american broadcasting company!
okay, this week's lesson is about family -- as in how to be part of one, how to create your own family, and when to let go. *spoiler alert*
how to be part of one
oh georgey! we finally see you step up in the eyes of your rambunctious brothers and your mother when they tearfully ask you what should happen with your father. your father told you "you were a good boy, georgey" before the surgery and now, in the scene where you shave your father and confess your childhood disgression, well, it had me close to tears listening to you talk with pride in how your dad and your brothers took up the battle and defended you against the neighborhood bully.
meredith, however, was more upset in realizing her relationship to the bumbling man who shared half of her chromosomes. (something i can wholeheartedly relate to.) both she and mcsteamy, the dirty mistresses are loners, not feeling the connection to a family, or really, even the need for one.
how to create your own
by now, everyone at seattle grace must be aware of the simmering competition between burke and christina in getting the other one to speak first. everyone knows the game and continues to refuse to play along in passing information about one of them to the other. christina in this episode goes so far as to try to withhold burkes' food until a nurse steps in to ask if she should alert security. as petty and childish as it may seem to outsiders, this is burke's and christina's relationship to the core - competitive and passionate. anyone else would have booted to the door with that behavior.
and izzie! poor izzie, i should stop calling her that now that she has deposited the $8.7 million dollar check denny left her in the bank (which was a great scene in part one). izzie is still searching for her family -- not literally, mind you -- but in terms of where she fits in. she is the den mother of the house with the baking and scrubbing of the bathroom floor just in case george needs to lie on it. her moment when she tells bailey that she is both, a surgeon and someone who will get involved with her patients, my heart beamed. i've always loved izzie for her strength and ability to stand up and fight. in some ways, she's a symbol of the new feminist - smart, beautiful, tough. go izzie!
when to let go
addison dropped a bomb in this episode, telling callie she aborted mcsteamy's baby and that this would have been her due date. (on a sidenote, i really like that callie is getting more story lines than simply being the dark, sexy chick who dances in her underwear.) addison knew that she wanted a baby but she also realized all the things wrong in her situation -- mark would be a horrible father, her child would only be a source of competition between mcsteamy and mcdreamy, and she didn't want to go it alone. yes, she wanted a baby, but she wanted it with derek in her old live. and that folks, takes guts to realize.
of course this post needs to wrap up with george, this was his episode all along. at the table in the conference room, we saw george step up and be the source fo strength his family needed. this time, he was the one to help rally his family in helping them realize that the man laying in the hospital bed with tubes, that wasn't their dad. the spirited man they knew and loved wasn't going to recover and it was time to let him.
goddess, i love this show. even if i have to watch it as a repeat and pray i don't get snippets of what happened before i can sit down and watch. this is not masterpiece theatre, you can guesss what's going to happen moreorless in each episode that's not the point of the show. the show is about how the characters relate more so than the actual plotlines. still if mam drops a plotline bomb on me again, i swear i will cut out his tongue.

friggin' reruns
okay, while trapped in the circuitous route known as the "holiday party" scene, i was relieved that i wasn't missing any new episodes of grey's anatomy. as much as i needed a shot of mcsteamy (yum!) and mcdreamy (hmmm, good hair!) during the month of december, not having to race home or feel guilty for missing my one-feel-good-hour each week relieved some of my anxiety.
mam has even learned to keep his big mouth shut while we watch. most of the time. the rest of the time, i need to flash him the universal "zip it" motion in sign language before screaming - okay, lunging at him, "you! no talk-y during grey's anatomy! shush!"
(you can feel my perturbance -- there's freakin' exclamation points everywhere in that sentence.)
but, hello, it's january already. bring on the new episodes. 'specially now that i scheduled a class for thursday nights (very reluctantly, i'll tell ya). i registered late and had a choice of a professor that i had 3 semesters ago and vowed to NEVER waste my time with again, or miss "grey's anatomy" for 15 long, miserable weeks.
of course, all my decision really did was speed up the inevitable -- we are now getting comcast's (otherwise known as satan's contribution to cable television) version of tivo so that i can record the episodes and watch them when i get home.
if i'm lucky, my digital-video-recorder will break just goddess girl liz's did when she first got hers -- it got stuck on the mcsteamy shower scene. not a bad place to break down if you ask me. or her.
(see, i told you comcast was the devil.) save me from my lusty thoughts, mcdreamy, and bring on the new episodes!

beauty in the breakdown
i knew it, i knew it, i knew it!

even though i knew before the end of the show we would get to see mcsteamy again, he still took my breath away when he stepped out from the bathroom with a very well-placed towel.
yum! once again, addison sheppard montgomery is a very lucky girl even as she has a drunken meltdown over the end of her marriage. she's almost as lucky as meredith who is once again doing the elevator thing with mcdreamy, but now she has mcvet throwing his hand in the ring for her affection.
so we now we see what happens when you are all dark and twisty -- you get the hottest mchunks out there, looking at you lustily while you get to leave your panties behind for someone's ex-wife to find.
i wanna be dark and twisty, too! even though my husband suggests i already am plenty dark and twisty, i am obviously not seeing any of the fringe benefits. for one, i now have a viewing partner since they moved the show slot to thursday. and one who will most certainly will lose his voicebox if he continues to offer commentary or suggest plausibility of a particular scene.
when grey was on sundays, it was just me and my bitches (sadie and chloe) who laughed, cried and screamed with the tv. now, my dic-husband (he's sooo not a "mc") watches with me and claims to understand what's going on but really with his questions, he's just jammering away at my last frayed nerves, edging dangerously close to losing that voicebox.
and poor izzie! looking frumpled and deflated, i love that katharine heigl is woman enough, no -- goddess enough -- to have her character go without makeup, looking like most women would, when her heart has been ripped out and put through a shredder. if i could have crawled into my tv to lay next to her on the bathroom floor to comfort her, i would have.
so there's definitely beauty in the breakdown, especially if mcsteamy comes to comfort you. and if not, then, maybe mcvet will bring you a sandwich.

pink mist
for any devoted grey's anatomy fans, you'll understand my reference in the subject line. in one amazingly brilliant episode, a patient comes into the hospital bleeding out and most likely to die if not for the actions of a young EMT played by christina ricci who instinctively put her own hand inside his chest to stop the flow of blood rushing from his heart.
her actions are somewhat heroic; the doctors are all amazed at her quick thinking to save the patient's life. that is, until they discover the patient whose heart she is holding is determine to have a live, homemade grenade lodged in his chest cavity. one that could detonate at any moment. with or without provocation.
that's how i feel right now. this blood clot in my leg is that live, homemade grenade wedged inside my calf at this moment, waiting to dislodge and travel to my heart or my lungs, cutting short my so-called life.
when this happens, when they know that it is a grenade that she is touching, her anxiety is palpable, her fear tangible as christina ricci acted her ass off in those scenes. so the moment when she decides she can't handle the pressure any more, good ol' meredith who is always a bit on the risky side, slides her hand in place of the young EMT. stupid move, some say when one false move could blow the building to smithereens. or pink mist, as the hunky bomb squad captain called it, as in the only thing left after detonation if you're the unfortunate one holding the bomb at the time.
the rest of the show is filled with nail-biting moments of anxiety and preparations to prep the hospital for the removal of the device. much like now, when i swallow 4 pills of blood thinner a day, trying to keep my blood thin enough while i wait for my body to dissolve the clot. much like now, there is confusion and uncertainty and moments of sheer anger at the helplessness of the situation.
and there are moments of sheer delirium when faced with challenge that you are able to muddle through, like meredith standing at the hallway watching the hunky bombsquad captain slowly make his way out with the building holding the device, freeing her from servitude to it. i was meredith yesterday after i successfully gave myself an injection, that's my "just in case" medicine.
in case the pills aren't working as they should (which they haven't) to prevent me from becoming my own version of pink mist.

you be me for a while
"ouch! you're touching me. why are you touching me?"
"christina, i like you. i really do. but i grew up in a trailer park and i know how to kick your ass. and christina, i will kick your ass if you don't give dr. burke back his surgical cap."
oh izzie! when my trailer-trash tv alter-ego said those words last night on grey's anatomy, my heart leapt. see, i grew up in the ghetto -- the urban equivalent to a trailer park -- and like dr. stevens, i grew up knowing how to fight.
no matter how hard i try to stuff the olney bitch posse (OBP) into my mental skeleton closet, it manages to pop out like the button on a pair of pants you desperately wish would still fit.
my personality fits the OBP well. at times, when i'm jazzed over an idea, or a project, i feel like i steamroll over people ("roll on" in OBP speak) not in a malacious way, but sort of like a beast who isn't aware of her size. or her intensity.
and awkward. like the big, orange hairy thing from a bugs bunny cartoon.
i feel like i need to slowdown because others around me aren't moving at the same speed. then i question what i am doing. are people staring at me like that because i am moving or talking too fast, because there's a booger hanging off of my face or are they scared i might eat them?
my worklife's mission so far has been to walk into a messy situation, observe the insanity, pull on my shit-waders and dive in to begin cleaning house. i organize, i create, i provide new methods and new thinking for old jobs. my resume should say simply say iSimplify to offer the newest product and creative services from me.
but trust me, i think i am learning to relish my "wonderwoman" role. look out, i have the lasso and i'm going use it. no excuses or lies when you get caught in it. my goldcuff bracelets riccochet the bitchy barbs of coworkers. "who the fuck does she think she is?"
then, after solving another problem and putting my clothes back on, people who see me walk down the street say, "oh my, she's such a lady, isn't she?"
if only i could find my wonderwoman underoos -- now, that would kick ass!

blue without "grey"
freakin' oscars. they preempted the all that is good in the world when they replaced "grey's anatomy" with tinseltown's version of the anorexic olympics. here we have adult women who haven't eaten in days, all decked out in couture with arms as thin as michael jackson's alibis lugging around an 8-lb gold statute. someone's gonna get hurt.
i tried to stay away from the massacre. i watched enough "pre-game" action to know that reese witherspoon is my new hero -- starred in 'sweet home alabama' with both mcdreamy and yummy josh lucas! beyond that, i got a little bitter. it's the last sunday before the "sopranos" make their triumphant return to hbo and i need to change my viewing habits. no longer can the 9 pm hour be used to pack my lunch, do dishes, iron my clothes.
okay, strike that last one. my husband irons all my clothes. let's switch it to "get my clothes ready." ahhh, much better.
but back to the stinky oscars. my nephew oscar's diaper stinks less than these award shows. when i am queen, i am going to change how these shows flow.
no longer will people have 5 minutes to thank everyone from their elementary school librarian to jesus in casting. uh-uh, the announcer will announce the category, introduce the nominees and a brief clip of their performance, then the envelope please..... at which point the winner will dart on stage, pump their reedy little arms in the air, accept their gold-plated paperweight and move offstage. brownie points are awarded if anyone trips across the stage doing their one-arm pump.
no "thank yous", no "i'd like to thank the academy" bullshit. we know you're excited. we know you're happy. and we sooo know you're thankful that not eating for 6 months paid off. so please save us the bland speech that everyone gives. like the freakin' energizer bunny, the same song just keeps going and going.
instead -- if you must give a speech -- tell us how you really feel: "see, jane in costume, i told you if i wore the pink bonnet, my character would suffer. and look, i've won an award. bite me, jane."
that's what dr. yang would say. bite me, academy.

from mcdreamy to mcsteamy...
oh god, i love watching grey's anatomy. it's so good that i forgo watching desperate housewives just so that i get that free one-hour to indulge in mere and the gang at seattle grace. it's like er without the grunginess. and coffee-house cool music. and with hotter people.
which leads me to mcdreamy versus mcsteamy, the newest character added to the cast in last night's episode. yummy! as if i wasn't enjoying the new found hunkiness of "mcdreamy" (who could stand to gain a few pounds), the writers bring in his nemesis, nicknamed by the girls on the show "mcsteamy". argghh. i am having sex on a regular basis and he made me all warm inside. mmmmm.
mcsteamy was brought on to provide some tension (he brought tension alright) as the lover who slept with addison, mcdreamy's wife, which led mcdreamy to bolt for seattle and hook up with poor-underfed intern meredith. (if only they would eat, they would be the perfect couple!)
"so we're the dirty mistresses," mere says to mcsteamy after he tells her he has heard of her as the lusty intern back in ny. now before you think bodice-ripping soft-core porn, grey's anatomy is chock-full of one-liners and omg-did-she-just-say-that moments. medical drama is thrown in simply to justify all the brainiacs being overstressed, thus requiring a prescribed treatment of sex which leads to overdose and being oversexed.
let me now say, not that i mind one bit. not one single solitary "mc" moment. uh-uh. i thought i was melting when they had a close-up of mcsteamy and mcdreamy in one camera pan. mmmm, makes me want to visit the golden arches.
from mcdreamy to mcsteamy, thank goddess for sweeps month!
which leads me to mcdreamy versus mcsteamy, the newest character added to the cast in last night's episode. yummy! as if i wasn't enjoying the new found hunkiness of "mcdreamy" (who could stand to gain a few pounds), the writers bring in his nemesis, nicknamed by the girls on the show "mcsteamy". argghh. i am having sex on a regular basis and he made me all warm inside. mmmmm.
mcsteamy was brought on to provide some tension (he brought tension alright) as the lover who slept with addison, mcdreamy's wife, which led mcdreamy to bolt for seattle and hook up with poor-underfed intern meredith.
